Mexico ingeniously entices people to throw away their dog’s poop into designated receptacles to give a local park free wifi. Read more about it here:
The age old question remains: Why Are Mexicans So Damn Smart?
Being both a gardener and a dog “owner”, I’m always thinking and talking to folks about the absurd waste of all the dog poop in this city going into landfills. That shit should be processed and turned into fertilizer or fuel.
When I went to China in 1978, I stayed in a house where night soil (i.e. the polite term for human excrement) was used instead of electricity. It was like a revelation to my young mind, the ingenuity and self-reliance of the system. There was a collection tank under the pig farm; methane gas ran through pipes into the house for lighting at night and fire for the stove; and after the material dried and decomposed to a certain stage, it was used to fertilize the fields. This is how you feed a country the size of China.
I realize that such concepts would meet heavy resistance in North America, but I still think there’s a way to get past the gross-out factor and recycle dog poop back into the city system. I’m gonna have to keep talking to people until the idea spreads.
